Presence of bells in the bell-tower of Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary (Kostel nanebevzetí Panny Marie) in Jindrichuv Hradec has long and interesting history. Original medieval bells (the biggest among them was famous bell called "Knauer" with mass 8000 kg from 1461) cast for the church were destroyed during devastating fire in 1801. After subsequent reconstruction in 1815 was church equipped by 4 newly cast bells - but their fate was also sad... They were requisited and recast into guns during WWI. So, today we can find in the bell-tower three bells, all medieval and with great historic value, but they were moved here from another churches in Jindrichuv Hradec. The main and the biggest of them is depicted, during your visit of tower easily accessible, bell called "Maria" (cast in 1495), which was originaly placed in Nicolas turret (Mikulášská vežicka) of nearby Church of St. John of Baptist.
The provost Church of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary is Gothic triple-nave pseudobasilica, dates back to the second half of the 14th century. Church's tower, which nowadays serves also a lookout tower and is 65 m tall, comes from the 15th century and got its present appearance - like a number of other town architecture - after the destructive fire of the town in 1801. You can visit the tower during spring-summer season and touch this great piece of bellcaster's art...
