It is believed that the original church, St.Michael's, was built about 1170. It had a single aisle which was increased in size in 1858 by the addition of a north aisle. The dovecote is built on the site of the original tower at the west end of the church above the west porch. The original two bells, cast by Christopher Hodgson in 1693, were recast in 1948 and retain the original inscriptions -- "Christopher Hodgson made me A.D. 1693". (Hodgson also cast some of the bells in Durham Cathedral.) The bells are still chimed to call the faithful to prayer.
