Frank Padget, an African-American slave and skilled boatman, led a rescue party to save passengers trapped on the canal boat Clinton during a raging flood in 1854. Padget was swept away and perished while trying to rescue the last passenger.
Capt. Edward Echols, who witnessed the act, erected this memorial to Padget's heroism near Lock 16 of the Blue Ridge Canal. The memorial was relocated to Centennial Park in the nearby town of Glasgow.
The text on the memorial, barely readable, says:
In memory of Frank Padget a coloured slave who during a [unreadable] in James River in January 1854 ventured and lost his life by drowning in the noble effort to save some of his fellow Creatures who were in the midst of the flood, from death.
