This 45-metre-high kinetic sculpture is one of the most visible art pieces in New Plymouth. It glows red at night as it sways in the wind.

Designed by the late internationally renowned New Zealand artist Len Lye, the sculpture takes pride of place on the Coastal Walkway. It was installed next to the walkway's central deck on 31 December 1999. The sculpture was damaged in stormy weather about a month later and the Wind Wand was removed for repairs. It returned to the Coastal Walkway on 5 July 2001 for the centenary celebrations of Len Lye's birth.

A narrow red fibre glass tube, 200mm in diameter, the Windwand stands 45 metres high on the foreshore of New Plymouth. Weighing approximately 900kg, the Wind Wand can bend at least 20 metres. At night, The red sphere on the top of the Wind Wand contains 1,296 light-emitting diodes (LED) and emits a soft red glow.
