Sagres is a small town at the south west tip of Portugal, the true Lands End (Finesterre) for Europe. This is an isolated barren windswept point with a rich history. Cape Vincent and the Fortalaza de Sagres are nearby. Prince Henry the Navigator used Sagres as his base and ordered the construction of the Fortaleza later trashed in 1587 by Sir Francis Drake. Christopher Columbus was shipwrecked here and spent several years here learning navigation.
The large horizontal sundial suits the location well. It is a simple sundial, a long gnomon parallel to the earth's axis and hour marks in a circle.
We visited here a year ago and enjoyed the Mardi Gras Carnival parade.
Sundial Type: Horizontal - Flat base, Ground or Pedestal mounted dial plate
