In the 1880's some 30 Schools of Mines were established...Thames being the largest. These schools assisted the miners working in the New Zealand gold fields. The school eventually closed in 1954.
Now it houses a Mineralogical Museum which is open on Saturday & Sunday 11am - 3pm.
In 1979 the complex was aquired by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust
