There is little doubt that J T Thomson was widely regarded as being influential on Southern New Zealand. Streets and parks are named after him. There are monuments in various locations that note his work. One -- Waymark WM813J -- is a simple hole in a stone and from it Thomson laid out the region around Omarau.

In Invercargill, a city he helped to design, his body is laid out in this rather simple mausoleum surrounded by the graves of his wife, daughter, and the family members
