Russian Centennial Tree
Dedicated on April 8, 1988
in honor of the
St. Petersburg Centennial
by the National Council
on American-Soviet Friendship.
This is one of two centennial trees planted in Demens Landing, a city park dedicated to Peter Demens, a Russian nobleman who built the first railroad pier in St. Petersburg in 1889. Born Pyotr Dementyev, he changed his name to Peter Demens after leaving Russia in 1881 and arriving in Florida. Demens named this Florida town St. Petersburg in honor of the capital city of Imperial Russia. To honor him, Demens Landing was dedicated as a city park in 1977.
