John Scott and his family were the first English settlers to colonise the town of Bunbury. That is to say, they were the first to voluntarily move to Bunbury with the intention of living there. Prior to the Scotts the area had been surveyed, travelled through, and a small garrison of soldiers had temporarily guarded the region, but the region was without permanent settlement.

Apparently, the Scott family (from Scotland) was dissatisfied with life in the Swan River Colony (the now town of Perth), and wished to travel to the eastern states colonies. However, the governor of the colony, James Stirling (who had a large land grant in this region) persuaded the Scotts to try the Bunbury area, which they did. Their Eelup farm was established in January 1838 (the Swan River Colony was created in 1829), and was to be the first between Pinjarra and Vasse. There they lived for 42 years.

The commemorative plaque is located in Anzac Park, adjacent to the War Memorial, the town library and other local features. I found the red lettering difficult to read.

Note: At this time Google maps incorrectly identifies Anzac Park. The correct Anzac Park is found at the southern end of Victoria St.

As it is difficult to read I include here the text of the plaque:

In honour of the first settler of
Bunbury
John and Helen Scott
with their sons
John, Robert and WIlliam
and stepson
Daniel McGregor
arrived in Bunbury January 1838.
John and Helen settles and lived
for 42 years at Eelup Farm.
Their good example was an inspiration to
later settlers.
Erected by their relatives and friends.
