The city of Perth, Australia was founded in the year 1829 by a British expedition lead by Captain James Stirling. The purpose of the foundation was to complete the British occupation of the Australian continent, and to curtail French interest in the region. The original colony was named "The Swan River Colony", and encompassed only the lands around the Swan River (the dominant river system in the region). In 1832 the colony was expanded to include the entire western third of Australia (as it is today).
The initial years and decades of the colony were hard, with slow population growth. The main impetus for expansion was the gold rush' in the 1880s/1890s.
At its founding Perth was characterised by its being a 'free' colony—no convicts were dispatched as a colonial labour force.
The centenary plaque is located at eye level on the Barrack St side of the 'old Town Hall'. It notes the founding of the city, and lists the names of the town council officials at the time. The town hall is a large and visible building, located on the south east corner of the intersection of Barrack and Hay Sts.
