Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is located north of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Really a neat place to go spend the afternoon.

During the 1890s, scientists rediscovered what the Lakota Sioux already knew - bones preserved in one of the most complete Miocene mammal sites in the world.

Yet, this place called "Agate" is a landscape that reflects many players – from early animals roaming the valleys and hills, to tribal nations calling the High Plains home, to explorers passing through or settling in the American West.

Summer Season - 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Off Season - 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Open from dawn until dusk year-round.




There are many things to do at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument including:

  • Visit the Visitors Center. Inside you will find exhibits on paleontology and another on Indians of the area. A twelve minute movie is also provided to get your bearings when here at the National Monument.
  • Go walk a trail.There are two main trails at the National Monument. The Fossil Hills Trail is two and a half miles, while the Daemonelix Trail is one mile.
