Here is the real story why a memorial to Jimmy Foxx can be found at the edge of a playground along South Chubb Drive.

At the time that Jimmy Foxx was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951, he was a resident of the Maplewood community which this playground adjoins. Jimmy played for four baseball teams - the Philadelphia A's, the Chicago Cubs, the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies and was a well known slugger and All-Star. His nicknames are 'Double X' and 'The Beast.'

Some noteables are that he was the Youngest player to ever hit 500 home runs at age 32, until Alex Rodriguez recently broke that record (the sign predates this feat) and he is one of the few players to hit 200 home runs for more than one team.

My guess is that he moved here after playing so many years for Philadelphia based teams in the 1920's and 1930's. Jimmy was born in Sudlerville, MD.
