The reservoir was built in 1968 with an initial capacity of 25,000 megalitres. In 1971 the reservoir was enlarged to its present capacity of 37,600 megalitres. The dam wall has an embankment 300 metres long and 34 metres high.

Presently the reservoir supplies limited domestic water because of poor water quality due largely to run off from nearby farms. Improvements in catchment management and water treatment will see Tarago Reservoir upgrade it's water quality and use.
