In the Old Testament of the Bible, Ezekiel witnessed four winged creatures, thought to be representing the four gospels that tell of Jesus to the world. Each of the creatures told the whole truth but each emphasised a different aspect of the Truth. The winged man is thought to represent Matthew (as he stresses the human nature of Jesus), the winged lion represents Mark (since he calls Him the Lion of Judah), the winged bull (ox or calf) represents Luke (since he emphasists the sacrificial nature of Jesus' life and death), and the eagle represents John, who speaks of Jesus soaring as on the wings of eagles, or the divine nature of Jesus.
