YHA Abergavenny offers comfortable accommodation, good home-cooked food and a friendly welcome in a stunning location close to Offa’s Dyke on the England/Wales border. Many of the rooms offer superb views of the surrounding mountains and are all small and private with no dormitories. The property boasts large private gardens to relax in and leisure facilities include table tennis and pool table. Guests can take advantage of a huge range of activities in the area including walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and paragliding and outdoor weatherproofs and gear can be hired from the property. YHA Abergavenny has been awarded a 4 star Green Dragon Environmental Award as well as a Visit Wales Business Class Gold Award.

History of the building:
The Centre forms part of an old Georgian town house built over 200 years ago. At one time it was part of the estate owned by the famous Lady Llanover. In 1906 this Grade II listed building became the new home for the Order of St. Michael’s and the Sisters of the Holy Spirit. The convent was extended in 1956 to provide student accommodation. Although strong ties are maintained, the Order of St. Michael’s left Abergavenny in 1976 and the building was purchased by the government owned Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) and became a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in the provision of exam-based environmental education. In 1992, when ILEA was disbanded by the government, ownership was passed to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

- I stayed here in 2009 as part of my challenge to stay in the Youth Hostels of England and Wales in alphabetical order. It is more expensive than most hostels but you do tend to get your own room which is worth the experience of staying in an old convent.
