Vickery House, one of the town’s most beloved structures, which was built as a three-room home in 1860 and later expanded to 12 rooms. In 1974, the house was given to the Dahlonega Club, which used grant money and contributions to restore this icon of the town’s heritage into a museum. It’s the first structure in town listed on the National Register. One room is dedicated to Ella Ray Oakes.

An endowment ensures its future care, paid for by rent charged to vendors at every July 4 celebration—usually about $2,500.(http://www.americanprofile.com/article/537.html)

The original grant money was part of the 1976 Bicentennial Celebrations and this plaque is found on the house

According to this website (link), from North Georgia College & State University states:

"In the summer of 2008, the state of Georgia and NGCSU accepted the Vickery House as a gift from the Dahlonega Club. With the deed to this 1850’s structure, which is on the National Historic Register, came a charge: educate the public on the history of the community and region while producing activities and events that invite participation and community-building. The University’s president, Dr. David Potter asked the Georgia Appalachian Studies Center to occupy the house and to fulfill the charge. The GASC director put together a visioning committee, made up of historians, informed citizens, regional business leaders, and local government representatives.

The Appalachian Learning Center supports the mission of the Georgia Appalachian Studies Center through education, cultural-history tourism, community building, and economic development.

Current activities and partnerships organized under the Learning Center include:

•Dahlonega Contra Dance

•Georgia Pick and Bow Traditional Music School

•Georgia Mountain Cultural Alliance

•Grassroots Arts Program
