The Mundaring Weir supplies water, via a 557km long pipeline to the Kalgoorlie goldfields and to the central agricultural regions of Western Australia. The catchment area of the dam is the Helena river.
The weir and the pipeline were constructed over a century ago (1898–1902). There was a great deal of controversy over the construction. The dam and pipeline involved a huge expense (2.5 million pounds) and the dam's designer, the Irish born C. Y. O'Connor, was accused of incompetence and corruption. Regrettably, these accusation drove him to suicide weeks before his pipeline was completed. Needless to say, the pipeline and the dam have been in operation ever since, and have made the central region of Western Australia a liveable and economically prosperous part of the state.
The waymark was made at the centre of the dam walkway.
