Zion National Park was Utah's first national park. The 1000+ foot high canyon walls were created thousands of years ago by the tiny Virgin River that runs through the park. Unlike the Grand Canyon where visitors are awed from the rim, Zion is experienced from the canyon floor. However there are several trails that allow visitors to hike to the top of the canyon. Some of these are short steep hikes while others are more gradual and longer. Another hike in the northern section of the park is in the shallow riverbed through Zion Narrows, a 30 foot wide space with cliff walls nearly 2000 feet high.
