The Santa Cruz Gap Turnpike Joint Stock Company was a private enterprise chartered on November 17, 1857. James Kennedy built the toll house in 1867.

From the History of Los Gatos web site:

The original structure was built in the 1860s as a toll house. It stood next to the toll gate on the trail used by travellers between Los Gatos and the mountain areas. After the road became public, and tolls were no longer collected, the building was used as a commercial venue for such businesses as a painter, laborer, and packer. It was rented as a residence in the 1920s and 1930s and reverted to business uses in the 1950s as an antique shop, then medical offices, and in the 1970s was home to an interior decorating business called "The Iron Gate." In the first decade of the 21st century, the reconstructed building holds business offices.
