You'll find this natural wonder of a balancing boulder tucked away in the Pawtuckaway State Park in New Hampshire. Pawtuckaway State Park with its three mountains lies in a small, rocky circular range of an ancient volcanic ring dike that was formed 275 million years ago. You can see the ring dike very good on a satellite view of your online map. The northern part of the park has a boulder field with one of the largest collection of big boulders in the world. One of these boulders is the
Balancing Boulder. The boulder is balancing on a much smaller rock which is half buried in the ground. The Balancing Boulder looks like a huge dinosaur egg and it is ca. 8 ft high, 17 ft long and 5 ft deep - that makes round about 50 tons!
Unlike many other balancing boulder where the lower rocks eroded away, this boulder was moved with a huge force by a glacier on top of the much smaller rock.
Best way to access Pawtuckaway State Park is from route 107 driving north. Look for Reservation Road to your right. Reservation Road brings you right into the state park. Take a left onto Round Pond Trail and drive to the end of the road until you reach Round Pond. From there it's just a short hike to the Balancing Boulder.
