"On February 13, 1947, this Imperial Oil Ltd. drilling rig struck oil 5,066 feet below the surface of a farm at Leduc, Alberta, 12 miles south of here. In so doing, it discovered the 300,000,000 - barrrel Leduc Oil Field, marked the end of decades of fruitless search, and ushered in a new era in Canada's economic growth.
Today this Oil Derrick stands as a monument to the faith and perseverance of Canada's oil men and a symbolizes the importance of Edmonton, the Oil Capital of Canada.
This Derrick was erected commemorate the Leduc Oil Strike of February 13, 1947. The Derrick si the original used to bring in the oil well known as Leduc Numbr One, the first of the producing oil wells in Northern Alberta."
