In 1984 when the USPS issued a 20 cent commemorative stamp as part of the 40th birthday celebration of Smokey Bear, the stamp and first day covers were issued at the Capitan post office.

This drop box, painted in Albuquerque by S.G. Campbell, was used to collect mail with the commemorative stamp during the celebration. Featuring the famous image of Smokey, and the dates of the 40th anniversary celebration, it was eventually donated to the Smokey Bear State Park where is now used to by kids of all ages to send mail to Smokey Bear.
