Smokey Bear is probably the most famous animal in America. Found badly burned in after a raging fire burned through the nearby Lincoln National Forest, he became the National Symbol for Forest Fire Prevention. Studies show that only Santa Claus is a more widely known figure among Americans than Smokey.

As would be fitting for such an icon, Smokey's memorial is in Smokey Bear State Park, and the memorial is a granite stone with a bronze plaque on it.
