Born in Hungary, Loui spent his childhood in a landlocked country and was always fascinated by the sea. When tension flared in his home country, thousands of people fled Hungary rather than stay under the Russian rule. Loui immigrated to New Zealand as a refugee with nothing but the clothes he was wearing. He began a new life in this country, in New Plymouth, living beside the sea, and his fascinating story is told on the Puke Ariki website, Immigrants and Settlers - Loui Kuthy - the old man of the sea.
A ships propeller is mounted on a memorial plaque in the garden outside the small Sugar Loaf Islands Interpretation Museum on Ocean Parade, in memory of this local fishing hero, Loui Kuthy, who died in 2004.
