Elephant Rocks are situated near Duntroon, a 40-minute drive from Oamaru on State Highway 83. Over 24 million years ago this whole area was under the sea. Whales and other marine life sunk into the soft sand which then rose to the surface during the last few million years. The result is an intriguing area of fossils and dramatic limestone outcrops, weathered to unusual shapes. This area is a favorite of climbers. Formed from soft limestone with short overhanging routes, the rocks are particularly popular for bouldering. Elephant Rocks and Island Valley are the most popular areas.
According to the The Crag, a rock climbing enthusiast’s social network, there have been at least 252 different routes mapped.
"The Chronicles of Narnia" were filmed in this area, so the rocks may look familiar to some viewers.
