Castle Rock was one of the first rock climbing areas to be developed in the Wharepapa Region, on farmland in an area of Ignimbrite rocky crags located between Te Awamutu and Mangakino.

Castle Rock (Wharepapa South) is located about 2km north of Wharepapa South on Owairaka Valley Road, and you will drive past it if you are traveling south from Kihikihi, turn right at the old Parawera stone store.
The climbing area is divided into two tiers, these are quite obvious as you approach from the road. Be very careful when on the upper tier as the ground can be slippery and steeper near the edge.

The crags in the area include: Wharepapa South, Froggatt Edge, Sheriden Hills, Bayleys Rd & Waipapa. They are able to cater for all climbers, with over 1000 bolted sport climbs from Grade 12-28 (US grades 5.4 to 5.13a).
There are guided climbing & abseiling trips with professional instructors and all equipment included. Visit the Wharepapa Outdoor Centre and Cafe, further along the road, for information, maps, guidebooks and equipment.
