The rocks of the gorge are mostly Limestone with iron rich sandstone on top. The gorge was formed in the ice age when any water in the limestone froze. It was the glacial melt water that eroded the ice-hardened rock away to form the gorge. Once the limestone thawed any water on the surface seeped into the rock instead of eroding it away. The deepest portion of the gorge 113 m/371 ft.
The south side of the gorge is owned by the Marquess of Bath's Longleat Estate. The cliffs on the north side of the gorge are within The National Trust.
Recreational climbing is prohibited between Easter and October, which is during the height of the tourist season for the remainder of the area. There are exceptions during the summer for climbing contests.
Some vegetation exists within the climbing routes because of the long stretches between climbing seasons.
