This Zarbula sundial at Maljasset is one of my favourites. Painted in 1860, the period of triumph for the Second empire. The dial features the Imperial eagle, the symbol of Napoleon, even Louis Napoleon III. Things changed rapidly for Zarbula with the Franco Prussian war.
Like the best of Zarbula's dials it overwhelms the building and its surroundings. This is now more pronounced as the dial was beautifully restored by Jean François Gavoty in 1990 while the decrepit building continues to decay. To find this dial follow the signs for the gite d'etape as the dial faces the gite. The dial has many of Zarbula's folk art features: sun face, lunar crescent, Masonic symbols, golden frame, curtains, flower pots, equatorial line and a bird, an Imperial Eagle. The Latin motto is “Vita fugit, suit umbra” Life passes like the shadow.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
