Zarbula Sundial 1840, Le Raux, Saint Veran, Queyras, France - Sundials on Waymarking.com

Le Raux is a hamlet just below the main town of Saint Veran. Zarbula painted a sundial here in 1840. Park near the sharp bend of the lower switchback and walk about 100 m down Rue de Four to see the original sundial. Like many of the originals, part of the dial is missing due to damage to the building. Most of the buildings were destroyed in a major fire in 1882 but the sundial has survived, missing an upper corner, one of the two exotic birds and the gnomon. This dial features a radiating IHS symbol and an equatorial line. The dial declines west of south. The date signature and motto is mostly effaced but enough can be seen to see the motto was the usual warning “Sans le soleil je ne suis rein et toi sans Dieu tu ne peux rein". SAF 0515718

This completes the waymarking of Zarbula’s sundials in Saint Veran. There are many more sundials here. The SAF catalogue listed 32 sundials, old and new at 20 locations in Saint Veran. That is one sundial for every nine full time residents of Saint Veran! This is a popular tour destination with busloads of tourists in the summer and school groups in the shoulder season. The sundials are the major draw but the traditional buildings and folk art including crosses with all the tools for crucifixion are interesting as well. This is a great area for hiking in the summer, and back-country skiing in the winter.
