Believed to be 180 years old, this tree is a prominent feature of this historic town. Many tourist pamphlets and tourist websites for Morton mention this tree, and it is also mentioned in many horticulture books as a fine example of the Ficus obliqua (Small leaved figtree)which is also known as a Moreton Bay fig tree.

"The property has established gardens and is surrounded by a botanic reserve named 'Mick Ryan Park', donated to the public by the original family owners. The main reason for the existence of the Park is the preservation of the Grand Old Fig Tree, a magnificent specimen of the Illawarra little leaf variety spanning almost an acre and estimated to be over 180 years old. (Heritage listed)"
