The regiment was founded in 1695 in Donauwörth. It wasn't named after its owner Franz Ludwig Duke of Bavaria but after his position, the Grand Master of Teutonic Knights.
The most important battles of the regiment were Battle of Zenta against the Turks (11 September 1697) and the Battle of Kolin against the Prussian (18 June 1757). Further battles - from over 200 - were 1712 Quesnoi, 1743 Campo Santo, 1758 Hochkirchen, 1789 Belgrad, 1793 Retschweiler, 1794 Haspres, 1799 Novi, 1809 Ennsdorf, Aspern, Wagram, 1813 Verona, 1814 Valeggio, 1849 Novara, 1859 Bagolino and 1866 Rozberic.
In 1895, at the ocassion of 200th anniversary the regiment was moved from Jihlava and Brno to Vienna and it was decided to build a monument to honour regiment's memory.
The construction started at 7 September 1896. It took 10 years before the monument, designed by the Austrian sculptor Johannes Benk, was finaly dedicated at 29 September 1906.
