In 1878 a Goethe Society in Vienna was founded. One of its aims was a Goethe monument in Vienna, but the funds were missing – after ten years, in 1888, only one third of the needed amount was collected.
In 1889 a competition was announced an in March 1890 in the Künstlerhaus were the best designs presented. Although the jury couldn’t agree on the winner, it gave only a recommendation for the sculptor Viktor Tilgner. Edmund von Hellmer was on the second place.
Not until three years after, in 1893, the second jury asked both sculptors to present new designs. Tilgner’s design “didn’t meet the measurements” and was excluded from the competition.
After next seven years, on 15 December 1900, preceded by lengthy discussion on a suitable site, the monument was finally unveiled on the corner of Goethegasse/Opernring close to Ferdinand Schiller, where it can still be seen today. It shows Goethe sitting majestically on a chair, but the elaborate ornamentation and rich representation of allegories, which were typical for the fin-a-siècle historicism, are absent. The inscription is also restricted to a simple “Goethe”.
