The Irish Brigade was formed of the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York Voluntary Infantry Regiments. They were joined by the non-Irish 29th Massachusetts and 116th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, composed of Irishmen from Philadelphia. The 29th Massachusetts was later replaced by another Irish regiment, the 28th Massachusetts.
Under Brig. Gen. Thomas Francis Meagher, the Irish Brigade saw heavy combat and developed a reputation as fierce fighters. Despite their bravery, in September 1862, the Irish Brigade suffered heavy losses as they led an attack on the sunken road at Antietam, now known as "Bloody Lane".
The Brigade went on to fight at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg losing many men in those and other battles. At its largest with 4,000 men in early 1862, by the time of the Battle at Gettysburg, the brigade had been reduced to only a few hundred men.
