There was a need for a second railroad bridge in Vienna in the late 19th century, in addition to the Emperor Ferdinand Nothern Bridge from the year 1838. The new Stadlauer Staatsbahnbrücke was opened 1870, but the increasing trains' weight and the ageing of welds made soon a reconstruction necessary. It was opened (beside the old one, which was removed then) under the name Stadlauer Ostbahnbrücke in 1932. It is the oldest existing bridge over the Danube in Vienna today.
