Behind the bird aviary in the Ashburton Domain, there stands a hungry tree, already devouring an old stone plaque at its roots.

The marble stone plaque, which is slowly disappearing into the bowels of the tree, has been replaced by another plaque placed well out of reach of this omnivorous tree.
It states: This tree was planted by the Mayoress Mrs H Woods on 6th May 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary.

The tree is a Fagus sylvatica purpurea or Purple Beech.
