The Melbourne Town Hall is located on the corner of Collins and Swanston Streets in the City Centre.
The Town Hall was architected by Joesph Reed (1823?-1890). Built in 1870, it was designed in the Second Empire style (a style popular in the 1865-80 that notably includes a tower with a French-inspired mansard roof). The tower, named Prince Alfred's Tower, features a 8ft clock that was dedicated in 1874.
Reed also designed many other nearby Melbourne iconic buildings (Collins Street Baptist Church, The Scots' Church, St Michael's Uniting Church, St Paul's Cathedral, Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Town Hall, etc).
In addition to being the seat of local government, the Town Hall also hosts performances, weddings and other exhibitions.
