Someone went to a lot of trouble to manufacture this home-made mailbox. First it is leveled off and elevated by a stone lift with mortar. It resembles the 130 year old sandstone wall across the street at the historic NRHP Quaker Meetinghouse, Arney's Mount.
Next, an old cannon or one fabricated to resemble one was set up and surrounded by a wooden casing was added. It resembles a caisson except it has four wheels. Usually a caisson is a two-wheeled cart which carries ammunition. Finally, a group of cannon balls was added and sits to the rear of the mailbox. The business end of the cannon is where you place and receive mail. A U.S. Army decal adorns the lid or door.
