Joseph II (13 March 1741 – 20 February 1790) was the eldest son of Empress Maria Theresa and her husband, Francis I. He was a proponent of enlightened absolutism and introduced many reforms, including religious freedom and public health measures. However, these reforms made him unpopular with his subjects, including the nobility, which eventually culminated in an ultimate failure to fully implement his programmes. He has been ranked, with Catherine II of Russia and Frederick II of Prussia, as one of the three great Enlightenment despots.

The iron monument, made by the sculptor Richard Kauffungen (1854-1942), was dedicated in the late 1880s.
