The Rocking Stone is perched on a natural plinth, at the top of a slope. Originally there were no trees, but North West Water filled the valley with non-indigenous fir trees, which spoil the view.

The Rocking Stone is marked on the Ordnance Surveys maps, as they only mark items 3 feet above the ground. The stone appears to be over 4 meters high, and there is daylight underneath. There are other boulders nearby, but are embedded in the soil.

There is a man made path to the Rocking Stone from the parking at the bridge across Launchy Gill.

There is an archive photograph of the Rocking Stone taken in 1892.

How has the stone ended up perched on the edge? Where has it come from?
