The Rialto Theater was built in 1921, functioning as Deer Lodge's community center, besides hosting movie screenings, concerts, live theater and civic events. Designed in the Beaux Arts style the 720 seat theater featured a painted stage backdrops in addition to mnay exotic design elemtents. The mansard style roof was capped with red roof tiles, making for a distinctive appearance in this small Montana town.
The theater was beautifully restored and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Then, tragically on November 4, 2006, the Rialto was extensively damaged by a fire, which destroyed the stage, auditorium, balcony and also the roof.
With the exterior largely spared, the town embarked on a restoration effort to return it to its former glory. This paper notice on the front of the theater speaks volumes to that effort.
