Facing the harbour, at the heart of the capital city of Port-Louis., Le Caudan Waterfont has become an essential actor of the vivid tourism and cultural life in Mauritius. With its 170 boutiques, it is a shopper's must. It is also a real melting pot for local artists, tasty cuisine experience and family entertainment while its marina welcomes boats from all over the world.

The name of Le Caudan Waterfront comes from a past figure: Jean Dominique Michel de Caudan who came to former Isle de France from Languedoc (a department in France). He started a salt pan in 1726, close to a small bay at the south-west of Port-Louis. This area, now known as the Robert Edward Hart Garden, is situated on the entrance road to Le Caudan Waterfront.

A historical site, the peninsula called Le Caudan was created around a fossil coral islet, hosting over the last 250 years a powder magazine, an astronomic and meteorological observatory, quays, warehouses, various small enterprises and the present commercial center, officially inaugurated on 25th November 1996.

This popular harbour area was living according to the rhythm of the sugar industry until the creation of the Bulk sugar Terminal in 1980. From these 150 years of millions of sugar bags transiiting by boat, by train or by trucks, carried by hundreds hands, only a few old walls are still standing and speak to the mind...
