A well preserved classic Greek amphitheatre, which could hold up to 700 spectators, you can find 500 m SW of the Palazzolo Acreide centre. The Akrai amphitheatre, made up of 8 tiers, 9 cuneus and 12 rows of seating, still is used during warm season thanks to nice placement and accoustic for concerts and cultural events. Ancient Greek city Akrai (Latin Acrae) was located in the place, where lies today sicilian town Palazzolo Acreide. Akrai, founded by Syracuse in 664 B.C, was important as it controlled the paths of communication with the towns on the southern coast of Sicily. In the treaty between the Romans and Hiero II of Syracuse in 263 B.C. it was assigned to the latter.
