The newspaper article posted inside the gaol reads:

Constable Ray Manley watches as the 54-year-old Tokanui gaol is up-rooted for the first stage of its journey to Waikawa yesterday. The gaol has served Tokanui for nearly 50 years, after being brought there from Fortrose where it was originally built in 1918. During his period of just over two years at Tokanui, Constable Manley remembers only one person who has occupied the cell, an elderly whitebaiter who needed a bed when his house burned down last year. It is proposed to use the cell as a showpiece beside the Waikawa museum, where concrete foundations have already been laid in preparation.
