The Türkenschanze where the park lies is a historic ground, due the Turkish siege of Vienna 1683 took here place the battle between the Turkish and the Polish army.
The park, designed by landscape gardener Gustav Sennholz, was opened 1888 and enlarged by Heinrich Goldemund and Wenzel Hybler in the years 1908-1910. Until 1918 it was the largest park in Vienna.
There are many "exotic" trees from China, Japan and America, most of them labeled as in a botanical garden, and several monuments, e.g. of Adalbert Stifter or Emmerich Kálmán.
On the East side of the park can be find a large sport area with skatepark, streetball, beach-volleyball and basketball. During my visit there I saw dozens of joggers running on the paths.
