Wairio was the interchange point between the Ohai Railway Board and New Zealand Railways. The former operated a shortline that served various coal mines in Nightcaps, Ohai, and Birchwoods. The latter had built and operated most of the railway network in New Zealand until sale to Wisconsin Central in the 1990s.
Today the Ohai Railway Board no longer exists having been sold to the Wisconsin Central network and through subsequent resales has returned to government ownership in 2008 operating under the name KiwiRail.
However, ex-NZR ZP15069 is here with a small collection of other rail cars. There has been long discussion of turning the railway buildings at Wairio into a small museum. In the meantime the grass continues to grow and the cars sit in sheds clearly marked "Private Property. Do not enter".
