One of the first and most popular of the early American historical novelists was lawyer, editor, and politician Daniel Pierce Thompson (1795 - 1868). His stories of frontier adventure and pioneer heroes of Vermont ran into edition after edition and are still read throughout the country.

Thompson is perhaps best known as author of "The Green Mountain Boys; A Historical Tale of the Early Settlement of Vermont."
