'The Guru Nanak Gurdwara is sited close to the centre of Bedford, in area Queens Park, which is close to the River Ouse. Bedford is a quiet town in central England and has a mixed community of cultures, religions and ethnicities.
The Gurdwara originated from a three bedroom semi-detached house in 1959. Initially, it was founded by the first generation of Sikhs who settled in Bedford.
As the Sikh Community was growing, around 1970, the Gurdwara moved in to a larger building. In which it gradually incorporated several premises into one over the years. This is now being used as the community centre.
In 1993, the Gurdwara Sahib was relocated to the present building which is adjacent to the previous building. The Gurdwara sahib went through a major refurbishment, revamping the Darbar Sahib and Langar Hall.
In 1997 the sangat of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, decided to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Khalsa by some significant jesture of commitment. In April 1999 (the Khalsa 300th anniversary) the foundation stone was placed upon the site of a new traditional Gurdwara building.
The design of a traditional Sikh Gurdwara was drawn up and a model made. The Guru Nanak Gurdwara had been developing its present Gurdwara building from its previous use as a community centre and applied to the Millennium Commission for funding, under its support for ethnic minority communities and was provisionally granted (match-fund) support to nearly £1M in June 2001.'
