In Brookline, just off of Newton Street, is a solar array on top of the Clay Science Center, which is a tall building on the school campus of the Dexter and Southfield private schools.

According to the web site for the Clay Center, the solar array is rated at 5.4 kilowatts. They were made by ASA Americas of Billerica, MA, which is now RWE Schott Solar. The specific product used was the Model 300, then the largest and most efficient system available in the world. Presently, the installation is part of the RWE Schott Solar's Solar on School partnership. The Clay Center is also a case study of Heliotronics, which provides systems that monitor the output of solar systems for schools. The web site has a web page where you can get data on the performance of the solar array (though the information appears to be incomplete at the time of posting).

The arrays are on the roof of the fourth floor on a patio-like area. The lobby of the observatory is on the same floor and large glass windows allow you to see the panels. There are three rows of panels, with 5 panels for each row. All are tilted at an angle, naturally, toward the south. If the weather allows, you can see the city of Boston in the background.

The panels are not visible from the ground, and, since it is a private school, care must be taken to either arrange for an appointment or visit during the public viewing times for the telescope or other public event. Check the web site for the Clay Center for scheduled public events.
Type of system: Photovoltaic (electrical)
