"Wollongong Harbour History Walk #6
Showing The Way
Australia's first pre-fabricated lighthouse, constructed in Sydney of 1 cm thick iron boiler plate was assembled and operating by 1872 at a cost of $2,251 Sitting atop the 12.5 metre high tower, the beacon, built in England in 1970, was originally lit by vegetable oil and showed a fixed light visible from the deck of a steamer about 12 miles away. By 1883 the beacon was converted to gas. An electric flashing light was introduced in 1921. With the growth of Port Kembla, to the south it became necessary to erect a larger lighthouse on Wollongong Head (Flagstaff Hill) in 1937. Public opinion saved the old lighthouse from demolition."
