"Sydney Bound
The original inner harbour or basin was completed by convict labour in 1844. Five years later the steamer "William the Fourth" departed Wollongong for Sydney with Illawarra's first commercial shipment of coal. By the early 1860s tramlines had connected mines west of Wollongong to the harbour area. With growing amounts of coal becoming available for export shipping within the harbour also increased. In 1889 the Wollongong Harbour Trust League wrote to the Colonial Secretary, Hon. Sir Henry Parkes, stating that the Harbour is "dangerously overcrowded with vessels and steamers". Within the following ten years the basin saw a rapid decline in shipping with the bulk of Ilawarra's trade going along the recently completed Sydney railway or through the developing harbour of Port Kembla."
